As a leader in the 21st Century, you work for you.
It doesn’t matter that you may technically be employed by a particular organization … you work for you.
The journey towards the 21st Century nurtured an evolution in how we, in our society, view the issues of security and loyalty. As one of my Coaching Clients so aptly put it, “It all began when we had to pump our own gas.”
In his book Free Agent Nation, Dan Pink says that security and loyalty have gone horizontal. Whereas we used to sense these two work related components as vertical within our particular organization, we now sense them horizontally – across our own network. Hence, my urging for you to see yourself as a free agent … a self-employed leader.
I’m not at all asking you to quit your job and consider self-employment. What I am asking you to do however is to, as a leader, be consistently conscious of your Personal Brand – just like you would if you were self-employed.
