” Being open and neutral in order to guide people …” – CoachingClient
For the individual, relevance is about knowing you are making a sustainable contribution – a contribution that is as unique as you.
Impact
A balanced outcome is one that is appreciated for both what is accomplished and how it was accomplished. An outcome is balanced only when it is sustainable – meaning the outcome has an impact with a wide reach. A leader’s sustainability is equal to his reach – the what, the how, and the outcome.
Impact is the result of a leader’s influence – an influence that has its source in the voice of the individual leader.
Detachment
You may be familiar with the concept of detaching from the outcome. The hectic life as a leader in the 21st Century organizational atmosphere often makes it far too easy to attach to the outcome. This attachment can blind us to the possibilities and options we have in selecting a path towards the outcome. Remaining attached to an outcome can come to possess us, thus spoiling our unique, individual impact and contribution. The leader’s impact is realized only partially by any outcome. We will be remembered mostly by our motive, method, and meaning.
The Leader as Guide
“What we are speaks much louder than what we say, and what we are can only be revealed to others by the way we live.” – Thomas H. Green, S.J. in When the Well Runs Dry
Your relevance finds its birth in who you are. Your relevance finds its life in the minds and hearts of others who have been impacted by your presence. The leader’s presence is a guide to others because she is clear on her purpose – her motive, her method, and her meaning.
Here’s the thing: You are Relevant. Remaining confidently relevant is a matter of trusting your own voice as you remain securely open and neutral. As a matter of process – process, that when discovered, guides others to where they desire to be.
