Mark makes a difference through his collaborations and connections. He is an inspirational personality type in a ‘spreadsheety’ world. Mark shared that term with me when we were talking about using the concepts of storytelling in a metric-heavy world. That is when Mark said; “It is taking the numbers that are sprayed in black ink on the page and adding color.”
Without the help of the storytelling leader, we cannot see the story of the color in the black ink. The color we know as black is our physiological interpretation when no specific light is distinguishable by our sight. Those spreadsheety characters are miraculously black as light (color) is absorbed equally into the form of each digit.
Through story we are assisted in seeing the connection of past to present to future in our commitments and actions. When presented with something thought-provoking, we sometimes need to unpack the matter to better understand what it means. Mark, with his strengths of collaboration and connection out front, is learning to respond and fill a need in the present as he tells us an unfolding story and unpacks the colors of understanding.
Mark is helping us see the story of impact as he leads beyond a simple presentation of numbers. He is beginning to tell the complete story as he directs the spotlight not on the lack of color in the sprayed numbers, but on the unique colors that collaborated to bring about those numbers.
